Shifting attention from the facilitator to the participant 2010-08-17 The most important contribution of this book is the way it shifts the focus away from the facilitator to the participant of the workshop, or indeed of all group learning situations. Like in a traditional class-facing delivery, the design of the sessions is of prime importance ahead of the actual sessions, so that everything is ready and have been carefully considered to meet both learning goals and participants' expectations. This book is very inspiring as it talks straight and directly about various topics and takes the reader through the various stages of running a great workshop, from inception, conception to delivery and evaluation. Not only good for workshops in a business environment, tips given in this books can also be of good use in any kind of learning environment. Warmly recommended.
A good how-to guide to facilitating groups 2010-07-30 The book is a good step-by-step guide in how to facilitate a wokshop, a training session or a meeting. Although more useful for a beginner than for a more advanced faciliator, the guide introduced concepts that stimulated my fantasy and managed to challenge my own way of running workshops. The author offers quite a collection of practical tips and tricks and things to remember when planning a session. Also, I appreciate the fact that the book does acknowledge that preparing a well designed workshop is hard work and that most of the problems that can occur are a matter of mistakes (or luck of experience) in planning. If I was to point out one area that I missed In the book I would mention the somewhat overoptimistic description of how to handle participants who _really_ do not want to be there. Although I do agree with the key suggestion to see their presence as a challenge and to channel their initially negative energy into something that contributes to the goals of the session, I am still looking for a good piece of advice on what to do In the rare occasions In which nothing else works... I am looking forward to my next workshop to try and introduce a couple of techniques from this book...
Practical and fun tips, even for the experienced facilitator 2010-06-01 Great little book, packed with wonderful, common sense advice, whether you are just starting out or are experienced. It will be a favourite companion as i travel and deliver.
excellent workshops made inspiring 2010-02-11 Excellent book, reallly helpful as I have started a new role and now have to run workshops. I gives some excellent tips but also goes into the theory behind different types of workshops to ensure you do the one that is right for you and your audience. I have already recommended it to a lot of my colleagues.
a must have 2010-02-04 What a great book, for new or experienced trainers, this book brings a wealth of knowledge in a relaxed usable manner which is quite simply a joy to read! The easy flowing text makes this a page turner and you often find yourself jumping around the book looking for the next little gem! Starting with you, your motives, styles and preferences this book really gets you thinking about how you work now and how that can impact in your sessions. A section around the number, location and requirements of your sessions sets the scene, whether running a 3 day facilitator workshop, a 1 day training session or a meeting with peers, this book has helpful hints for all. My favourite section was chapter 2 - whole brain learning primer. This section cleverly introduces several learning styles to be able to get you engaged with how others learn - by no means an in-depth section the info is short and concise, getting you to think about each style , not preaching at you. A great section for finding your feet and leading to other learning's. A short intro into using both left and right brains, multi channel learning and multiple intelligences all lead into a rather nice introduction to Honey and Mumford. The largest section of the book is building a great session, as you would expect, this section gives you a toolkit to use yourself or to simple crib from, adapt or just enjoy some of the ideas. With samples of welcome packs, room layouts, games and activities , along side a great questions and answer section the whole book builds on your confidence either by introducing new avenues to you or by reminding you of your journey so far! Sometime the simplest solutions are the best! Whether to dip in and out of or to read from cover to cover this is a must for anyone who has the task of running a workshop, training session or meeting! I love this book!
