iPAQ vs Palm 2010-05-04 The iPAQ was purchased to replace my 4th Palm Pilot of various models because Palm seem to have got out of the PDA market. It does more or less what I want but is very slow by comparison. Maybe HP should buy the Palm operating system which can also sync with MS Office. Searches which took a second or two now take 30 seconds and accessing records is a bit cumbersome. The most important button is the 'soft reset' on the side as I've had it hang a lot. Currently I've put only a few word and excel files on which are a bit easier to use than on the Palm but have around 1100 'items' in contacts, notes and tasks. WiFi operates OK but if the signal is weak it grinds to a halt instead of just dumping the connection and returning control to the user. Overall, I'm disapointed but there don't seem to be many options out there. ( I do have an iPhone which duplicates some of the functions but lacks others so that is not really a good alternative ) John
HP iPAQ 214 2010-03-21 Bought this as a replacement for my aging 2210. First impressions were that it was very big and that it didn't feel as good quality as the 2210. Using it for a period of time, I now love it and can't put it down. It connects to my wifi instantly, the screen is suburb, and now that I've put on my favorite software its fantastic. If you want to browse the net, download the Opera Mini Browser. It knocks spots of Internet Explore. Its sooo fast and touch friendly, I don't know why HP didn't include it with the device. Easy connection to my Tom Tom bluetooth GPS and navigation is great with the big screen, especially when you can switch to landscape mode at the touch of a button. Have got a HTC Touch HD which is an all-in-one, but I still like to have a separate PDA and phone. There is still a market for the PDA and if you are like me and want separates, then you won't go far wrong with this.
A real bargain 2010-03-02 A store demonstrator that was said to show minimal wear and tear. In fact, I could detect no evidence whatsoever that it was anything other than brand new. Rapid delivery, good price, goods in superb condition, what else could one want?
Nice ! 2010-01-23 Awsome PPC - took a 16 Gig class 6 SDHC no probs + got enough points with the voucher in the box on the iPaq app store to get a couple of games and a DVD ripper tailored to the small screen. (movies seem to average some 300Mb with its default iPaq settings - make sure you use the free TCPMP app to play them - windows media player just can't seem to keep up and keeps pausing). Combined with the free and open source freda / calibre applications its also an excellent eBook reader capable of reading (non-DRM) epub, html or txt books (calibre will convert almost any non-DRM eBook to ePub). The screen (although it is very nice for a PDA) isn't as good as an e-ink screen but its good enough and the device is more portable than any of the dedicated readers (I use my Sony reader to read at home but take this around with me when I'm out and about). Was able to customise the buttons easily so the 'mail' one on the front launches freda and the side button flips pages. Got a large collection of digital photos, 300+ eBooks and a pile of films to watch all on (half of) one 16 Gig card, as well as some games to play and the usual sync of my outlook diary / contacts. Excellent travelling companion ! Was in two minds whether to replace my old PDA (my 5 year old Asus just died) and just go for a 'smartphone' this time - glad I went for this. Its a better PDA than any smartphone I've seen and I have a small simple mobile for calls / text. Combined with Opera mobile (way better than IE) its also a decent handheld browser.
