It has saved my bacon many times! 2010-09-03 I purchased one of these for myself last Christmas, and have found it a Godsend, as I sadly have no sense of direction at all. After I got hopelessly lost one night with my husband on the way back from a party, I set it up and he was amazed at how clear and easy to use it was. He has always been totally against satnavs, and laughed when I got mine. As we arrived home that evening he announced that he was also going to purchase one. I would highly recommend it.
It did not work. 2010-09-02 Hi I received my Garmin 255T today. Arrived ahead of estimated date too. Once connected up it gave a message 'System Software Not Present' & would not switch off! I tried to obtain advice via the Garmin web-site, but their contact page would not respond after I'd completed it. I phoned Garmin at Southampton to be told the only option available was to return it to Amazon. Sadly it has been returned & I now have to await a refund.
sat nav feedback 2010-09-01 So far, this sat nav's working well, to be fair I'm still learning how to get the best out of it but it does the basics really well. I like its versatility in that it fits easily in both our cars - mine with the suction cup windscreen mount, my wife's with the optional bean bag accessory - it even works in my motorcycle tank bag, although I'm still working out how to use it properly on my motorbike. You can only hear sound below about 30 mph. That's not really a criticism as it's not intended for use on a bike. Overall initial impression - very user-friendly.
Garmin Nuvi 255 Traffic Satellite Navigation System with Full EU Mapping 2010-08-04 There seems to be a constant 'war' between advocators of 'Tom Tom' and 'Garmin'so I looked long and hard at ALL manufacturers of satnavs before narrowing my choice (of a replacement for my aging Michelin 960) down to two. Yes, Tom Tom and Garmin! My decision was ultimately swayed by the latest 'Which?' report so ahead I went and received delivery in a commendably short period of the nuvi 255t. Whilst the old Michelin required a degree in Technology to fathom out where certain features lurked within the menu, joy of joys the 255t was, as mentioned by others, highly intuitive, hardly needing a manual. It works straight out of the box but it's highly advisable to register the product straight away and download the current map and 'safety camera' data. I timed this purchase specifically for a longish journey taking my 94 yr old Mother from Essex to unknown areas in the Midlands to visit relatives. I could not trust the elderly Michelin as it was getting a little temperamental and had started taking me into fields; neither did I want to trust my Mothers failing eyesight and thus map reading abilities. I was thus dismayed when the 255t packed up on day 3 just 72 hours prior to our departure. Amazon, God Bless their cotton socks actually managed to get a replacement to me in 2 days! I'm pleased to report thet this one has behaved perfectly ever since. There are several things that I like very much about this gadget: the intuitive nature of the menus (as said), the rapid recalculation of driver route errors, the fact that you can load destinations/routes/pictures direct via Google maps, trip reports, clarity of spoken instructions quite imune from all shouted arguments by the driver, route diversion and traffic avoidance by the use of information gathered by the RF device built in to the power cord (the 't' function). There is a point worth making on that. The unit comes boxed with a length of cable - blank at one end and what looks like a stereo 3.5mm jack at the other. Strangely there is no mention of this anywhere; not even in the full manual (worth downloading from the web). I therefore contacted Garmin about this and, here's a laugh, they didn't initially know what I was talking about and asked me to send some pics! It transpires that this wire plugs into a small box on the power cord and acts as an auxilliary aerial for receiving the RF traffic signals! There are probably two minor gripes that I have; first, I do not much like the lurid colour of the line on the map which indicates the proposed route or that at complicated roundabouts you have to keep you wits about you to ensure the correct point of egress. Apart from that - it's brilliant and I've no hesitation in recommending it.
sat nav for the first-timer 2010-07-27 This is my first experience of sat-navs and I found it took a few hours to get the hang of all the features. I have only used it on local journeys so there has not been an opportunity to try out the traffic update feature but the nuvi gives a good audible warning of speed cameras and I turn it on even when I know the way. Unfortunately one cannot turn off the voice directions without affecting the camera warning "pings". The Garmin nuvi is a very handy size and seems well made. This one was keenly priced via Amazon but may have been in stock for a while as the installed maps are a couple of years out of date so it is important to use the free updates. The Amazon service was first class - prompt delivery, good packaging and a comforting refund policy. Garmin has quite a good support website which helped me out on a couple of problems.
